Enrolling at UC Berkeley Haas

Exactly one year after my company-sponsored study abroad was approved at the end of March the previous year, I completed the MBA application process. Fortunately, I received offers of admission from schools including Chicago Booth, Northwestern Kellogg, and Michigan Ross, and ultimately decided to enroll at UC Berkeley Haas.

Reasons for choosing Round One

When it came to choosing an essay (study-abroad) counselor, I did not spend an excessive amount of time deliberating. I was introduced to Mr. Round of Round One Admissions Consulting by a colleague from my company who had used his services the previous year, and since I felt no particular misgivings, I decided to proceed. If I were to articulate my reasons, they would be as follows:

  • I believed it would be more efficient to prepare in English from the outset.
  • I felt it was necessary to test whether what I wanted to communicate—both in writing and verbally—would genuinely resonate with a native speaker, and also believed that communicating in English itself would serve as effective practice and learning.
  • I understood that he likely possessed a solid track record in this field.
  • He takes a hands-on approach and makes necessary revisions (not only checking English, but also handling time-consuming tasks such as adjusting word counts—of course, with the meter running accordingly).
  • I felt that using Skype eliminated the need to spend time traveling long distances for counseling sessions, and that this method was modern, convenient, and efficient.

A "black box" process

To be honest, I am not entirely sure how closely each school reads essays (it sometimes feels as though having the required scores alone is enough to secure an interview), and ultimately, one’s past experiences do not change. I therefore tend to think that it is sufficient to write essays that you yourself are satisfied with. Since most applicants use native-speaking counselors and polish their essays to a comparable level, I personally doubt that essays alone create dramatic differentiation. That said, if all applicants are investing time and money to enhance their applications, then at the very least, one must ensure that one’s essays do not appear inferior by comparison.

An excellent pace-setter

Having actually gone through the counseling process, I found Mr. Round to be an excellent pace-setter. I do not recall my content ever being outright rejected, but I was genuinely impressed by essays that came back heavily marked with bold red-pen edits. Seeing my essays returned with word counts matched perfectly was, quite frankly, almost moving.

Choosing the wrong counselor can be a painful experience

Essay counseling is often the most expensive component of the application process, and choosing the wrong counselor can be a painful experience. I therefore recommend selecting a counselor carefully and without rushing, in a way that aligns with your own preferences. In my case, the result was fortunately a very satisfying MBA application experience, and I sincerely hope that those of you who are about to begin your journey will also have a fulfilling and successful application process.
