Advisory Model & Process
What does R1 do?
How has R1 evolved since its establishment in 2004?
R1 was established in 2004 as a boutique admissions consultancy, initially focused on supporting internationally mobile professionals—particularly Japanese MBA applicants—through competitive graduate school applications.
Over time, R1’s work expanded in response to client needs and long-term outcomes. Former admissions clients began returning at later academic or professional inflection points, and new clients sought guidance not only on admissions decisions, but also on career positioning, transitions, and sequencing across countries and industries.
Today, R1 operates as an advisory practice supporting both academic and professional decisions, grounded in the same emphasis on judgment, preparation, and long-term perspective that has defined the firm since its founding.

What is an Assessment Interview?
The Assessment Interview is an exploratory, evaluative conversation used to determine whether an advisory engagement would be appropriate and productive. It is not adversarial or performative.
The Assessment Interview is not automated and is conducted personally by R1’s Founder and Principal.
Is any special preparation required for R1’s Assessment Interview?
No special preparation is required. The Assessment Interview is not a test, audition, or formal evaluation of performance.
Applicants are encouraged to reflect in advance on their academic or professional situation, the decisions they are facing, and what they hope to gain from advisory support. The conversation is exploratory and focused on understanding context, readiness, and fit.
For Academic Track applicants, disclosure of test scores is entirely optional. We understand that some applicants might be in the early stages of preparing for required exams and may not yet have taken them or achieved competitive scores. This is not a concern.
If relevant exams (e.g., IELTS, TOEFL, GMAT, GRE, or EA) have already been taken and applicants are comfortable sharing that information, then it may be helpful for contextual understanding. Early-stage or lower scores are not used to screen or eliminate prospective clients and do not need to be disclosed. Test scores are never considered in isolation and do not need to be prepared, optimized, or presented formally.
The purpose of the Assessment Interview is to determine whether an advisory engagement would be appropriate and productive. It is not necessary to rehearse answers, prepare materials, or present a polished narrative.
Does R1 limit the number of clients it works with at any given time?
Yes. R1 works with a limited number of clients at any given time in order to provide thoughtful, individualized advisory support.
Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, taking into account fit, readiness, and current capacity. Because the nature and timing of advisory engagements vary across academic and professional contexts, availability may fluctuate over the course of the year.
Not all applications result in an engagement, and R1 may recommend waiting, redirecting, or not proceeding when appropriate. This selectivity reflects R1’s advisory-first model and its emphasis on judgment, preparation, and long-term perspective rather than volume.

Services & Boundaries
What types of support does R1 provide?
What does “selective” mean in practice?
How does R1 use its network to support clients over time?
How does R1’s advisory approach differ from program-based or packaged services?
R1 does not offer bundled or program-based services. Advisory work is structured as selective engagements grounded in Strategic Guidance and tailored to the individual’s context, readiness, and long-term objectives.
Program-based or packaged services are often appealing because they offer predictability and perceived cost savings through predefined components. R1 takes a different approach. Rather than allocating a fixed set of services or hours in advance, time is allocated based on what is substantively required at each stage of the process.
This approach allows advisory work to remain flexible, deliberate, and responsive to evolving circumstances, including real-world application timelines. Executional Support (such as Essay Counseling, Professional Application Counseling, and Interview Training) is provided where appropriate, but always within the context of an advisory engagement, rather than as part of a fixed program. This ensures that clients receive high-quality deliverables aligned with evaluative requirements, targeted deadlines, and their specific circumstances—rather than less distinctive outputs produced under the constraints of a predetermined package.
At the same time, R1 is highly conscious of both time and cost. Advisory work is conducted with care and efficiency in order to achieve the necessary outcomes in the least amount of time required—without compromising judgment or quality. This approach is intended to optimize the value derived from the time and effort invested.

Fees & Practical Matters
Does R1 publish a fee schedule?
How is the cost of working with R1 determined?
R1 does not publish standard pricing. Engagements vary based on context, timing, complexity, and the nature of the advisory support that may be appropriate.
Costs are discussed only after fit and scope have been evaluated through the Application for Consideration and an Assessment Interview, and only if an advisory engagement appears appropriate. This ensures that pricing discussions are grounded in a clear understanding of the work involved.
Note that R1 is highly conscious of both time and cost. Advisory work is conducted with care and efficiency in order to achieve the necessary outcomes in the least amount of time required—without compromising judgment or quality.
Can I contact R1 before applying for consideration?
Yes. If you have a brief, general question and are not yet ready to apply, you may submit a General Enquiry. Before doing so, we encourage you to review R1’s website and the FAQ section, as many common questions are addressed there.
For evaluation of your individual situation or potential advisory engagement, an Application for Consideration is required.
Does R1 work with clients in different time zones?
Yes. R1 regularly works with clients across multiple countries and time zones. Engagements are structured to accommodate international schedules where appropriate.
AI & Technology
Can I use AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT) when preparing applications?
Policies vary by institution and may differ by application component (e.g., written essays versus interviews or video submissions). Some schools permit limited use of AI for idea generation or editing with disclosure, while prohibiting AI use during interview or video stages. Others restrict AI use more narrowly.
R1’s expectation is simple: applicants must follow each institution’s instructions, maintain integrity, and ensure that all submitted work is an authentic representation of their own experience, judgment, and voice.
Will using AI improve my chances?
AI tools can assist with early-stage drafting and clarity, but they cannot replace judgment—what to pursue, when to act, and how to position a candidacy credibly.
Over-reliance on AI often produces generic, flattened writing that reduces differentiation. R1’s focus is helping clients make high-stakes decisions well and present them convincingly in their own voice.
Does R1 use AI tools when advising clients? If so, how?
R1 is familiar with modern AI tools and may use them selectively for limited support tasks, such as exploring phrasing options, identifying ambiguity, or stress-testing clarity. However, AI does not drive R1’s advisory work. Strategy, readiness assessment, positioning, and decision-making remain human-led and grounded in more than 30 years of advisory experience.
Where an institution requires disclosure of AI assistance, R1 will guide clients on how to comply in a straightforward and truthful manner.
