I received confirmation of company sponsorship in April, but there was very little information around me about MBA study abroad. As a result, I was proceeding rather leisurely with my preparation when I had the opportunity to speak with a senior colleague who had just returned from an MBA program. It was through that conversation that I first learned how critical essay counseling is. This colleague had begun his MBA in Fall 2005 and introduced me to Mr. Round, who was already well known at the time as an essay counselor. Upon learning that each essay counselor can only take on a limited number of clients, I immediately contacted R1. After an assessment interview with Mr. Round, he agreed to take me on as a client—this marked the true beginning of my MBA marathon.

Until July, I focused on studying for the TOEFL iBT and GMAT. By the end of August, however, I had not achieved the results I had hoped for and began working on my essays anyway. (Since the introduction of the TOEFL iBT, achieving high scores quickly has become much more difficult, and I believe that the traditional approach—“focus on TOEFL until reaching a target score, then GMAT, then essays”—is no longer realistic.) Balancing TOEFL and GMAT preparation with essay writing while managing a demanding job is extremely challenging. The reason I was able to maintain this balance was that Mr. Round carefully planned the pace required to submit a complete and polished set of application materials to multiple schools (I applied to nine in total). Based on this schedule, I received essay counseling once a week.

For those who may not have a clear image of what essay counseling entails, at R1 it involves jointly digging into your past experiences in response to each essay prompt from each target school. The process is as follows: (1) brainstorming as homework, (2) receiving advice and deeper probing from Mr. Round, and (3) refining the selected ideas into highly polished essays. Importantly, this entire process does not require speaking directly with Mr. Round—everything can be conducted via email and Skype chat. I was initially skeptical about whether this method would work smoothly, but I quickly grew accustomed to it and eventually realized that it suited me very well (more on this below).

For most applicants, the second round (December–January deadlines) is the most common application timing. I had not anticipated just how busy the period immediately after submission would be—around the New Year, in particular, I went through a stretch of extremely limited sleep. Even under such an intense schedule, I was able to prepare highly polished application materials for all of my target schools thanks to Mr. Round’s precise schedule management and follow-up, tailored to each school’s deadline.

Once applications were submitted by mid-January, the focus shifted to interview preparation. I had not initially realized just how important interviews would be, but R1 provides very thorough interview support. First, there is an online lecture covering interview structure and strategies. This is followed by mock interviews that allow you to experience firsthand how challenging interviews can be. Then, interview training is customized for each school. A key strength here is that Mr. Round and Ms. Round—who thoroughly understand interview formats and admissions evaluation criteria—provide optimal response strategies based on the essay discussions conducted up to that point. In particular, the questions you ask admissions officers at the end of the interview are often decisive, and R1 offers tailored advice that integrates your strengths, motivation, and each school’s unique characteristics. I believe this is one of the major reasons R1 clients are so successful at top schools.

From March through early April, I received offers from nearly all of the schools to which I applied, including three top-tier programs. The reason I was able to elevate my essays and application materials to such a high level of completion—while allocating my remaining time efficiently to TOEFL and GMAT preparation—was entirely due to R1’s meticulous, reliable support.
