“Admission would be difficult”

Although I was generally told by other major prep schools and online essay-editing services that “admission would be difficult,” I was ultimately able to secure admission to my first-choice school, Columbia University SIPA (School of International & Public Affairs). This outcome was made possible thanks to Mr. Round, who provided Strategic Guidance, and Ms. Round, who handled my Essay Counseling.

Below, I would like to explain why I recommend Round One Admissions Consulting Co., Ltd. (R1) not only to MBA applicants, but also to those aiming to study abroad in non-MBA programs.

Proven admissions results beyond MBA programs

(Strategic Guidance ⇒ Mr. Round: At R1, the process began with an in-person interview with Mr. Round in Tokyo, during which I explained my situation and received advice on how to approach my applications.)

In Japan, where graduate study abroad is often equated with pursuing an MBA, it is rare to find counselors with sufficient experience in non-MBA fields. Even when such experience exists, it is often limited to applicants who already have extensive professional experience in that field or who are pursuing research-oriented programs. I met with several counselors, but for someone like me—who hoped to use graduate study abroad as a stepping stone for a career change—the strategies they proposed did not seem effective for my case, and I could not bring myself to think, “I’ll entrust this to this person.” Mr. Round, however, was entirely different. When I explained that I lacked direct experience in the field but wished to pursue graduate study and shared my post-graduation aspirations, he took a completely different approach. He encouraged me by explaining that, for U.S. graduate schools that value diversity, my background was not a disadvantage at all and might even work in my favor. I remember feeling genuinely uplifted after meeting with Mr. Round, thinking that perhaps I, too, could be admitted to the graduate schools I admired. In fact, by following the direction he proposed, preparing my essays accordingly, and submitting my applications, I was accepted by every graduate school to which I applied.

Weekly, scheduled online essay review

(Essay Counseling ⇒ Ms. Round: I received essay feedback from Ms. Round via email every Tuesday.)

Although I enjoy studying English, I knew that writing essays—where I had to present myself—would be far more painful for me than preparing for the TOEFL or GRE. For that reason, I felt it was essential to create a structure that would force me to confront my essays regularly. Due to work commitments, traveling to an essay school was difficult, and I also found it stressful to have to make a reservation every time just to secure my own time. With R1, my counseling schedule through the end of the year was secured in advance, allowing me to plan both my essay work and test preparation with peace of mind. Some people may feel uneasy about creating essays solely through email communication, but I personally experienced no inconvenience at all in working with Ms. Round. Whenever I had questions, I could email her at any time, regardless of scheduled counseling hours, and I always received a response within 24 hours. Through repeated email exchanges in English, I also felt that my ability to write smoothly in English improved significantly. In non-MBA applications, interviews are often not required, meaning there is no opportunity to recover through an interview—the impression created by the essays plays a decisive role in admissions decisions. In that sense, the email-based exchanges with Ms. Round were excellent training in maintaining a high level of awareness about how my writing conveyed who I was.

Building a relationship of trust

Compatibility with a counselor is an important factor in essay development. Some people believe it is better to consult multiple counselors to gain diverse perspectives, but I felt that would only confuse my own thinking. I wanted one counselor to oversee my work from beginning to end. When I enrolled at R1, Mr. Round explained that Essay Counseling would be handled by Ms. Round, and that she was very similar to me in personality and would support clients patiently. In practice, I developed my essays with Ms. Round in accordance with the strategy established by Mr. Round during Strategic Guidance, and the information sharing between Mr. and Ms. Round was excellent. There were never any discrepancies in their understanding, nor did I ever receive conflicting advice.

Ms. Round also took the time to fully understand my interests, introduced me to relevant articles and websites, and offered words of encouragement when I struggled to complete assignments due to low motivation. Because she works with a limited number of students, I always felt that she genuinely cared about my progress. With each week of feedback, our relationship of trust deepened, and I was able to persevere through to the end and complete essays that I was truly satisfied with.

Comprehensive, end-to-end services

When applying to graduate schools, there are many occasions beyond essays where English editing is needed. In my case, this included confirming program details with universities, contacting professors who had been introduced to me, writing cover letters for applications, and completing response forms after receiving offers of admission. I asked R1 to handle all of these. Especially when contacting professors, I was extremely nervous, but Mr. Round advised me on how to respond appropriately and prepared the English text for me, allowing me to proceed with confidence. During the application process, even small details can become sources of anxiety. At one point, I asked Ms. Round what type of paper I should use to print documents that had to be submitted in hard copy. She responded kindly and even recommended a suitable store.

I believe it is precisely because R1 provides comprehensive support—taking on all of the questions and anxieties that arise during the application process—that applicants can focus on their essays with peace of mind. R1’s total service makes this possible.

"You get what you pay for"

R1’s fees are by no means inexpensive. It is certainly possible to find schools that charge far less. However, if those services do not lead to admission, they ultimately have no value. Now that I have secured admission to my first-choice school, I have once again come to appreciate just how critical essays are in the graduate study abroad process. I am deeply grateful that I encountered R1, which guided me to such a wonderful outcome.

I wholeheartedly recommend R1’s services to anyone considering graduate study abroad in the future.
