Many challenges and unexpected events

I am pleased to share that I have been admitted to my long-held aspiration, IE Business School. I began studying in early 2012 with the dream of enrolling in a U.S. MBA program in the fall of 2013, but along the way I faced many challenges and unexpected events—my English scores stagnated, and my wife became pregnant, among other developments. By adjusting my plans in line with changes in my personal circumstances and ultimately shifting my focus to a European MBA with fall 2014 intake, I was able to gain admission to one of the top schools, thanks entirely to Mr. Round’s strong, warm, and continuous support.

Below, I would like to share what I found valuable about Round One, as well as some general advice for those considering an MBA.

What makes Round One exceptional

High quality

Essay counseling begins with a thorough discussion of one’s background, motivation for pursuing an MBA, and current state of English preparation. Mr. Round takes the time to fully understand each individual’s personality and provides holistic advice, resulting in a level of quality far beyond simply polishing essay writing. In my case, while I had a vague sense of why I wanted an MBA and what my future might look like, I lacked clear short- and long-term goals. Through careful counseling, Mr. Round identified the areas that needed clarification and guided me with precise advice, leading the way toward concretizing my career path. He also supported the process of translating these ideas into essays in a powerful and efficient manner, enabling me to ultimately produce highly effective essays. I believe this kind of personalized support is a core value of Round One, made possible by its extensive experience and limited client intake.

Flexibility

For MBA applicants, unexpected developments and resulting changes to plans are almost inevitable. In my case, my wife became pregnant during the application process. When I informed Mr. Round that I needed to postpone my plans by one year after considering various factors, he responded with warmth and understanding, even allowing the fees I had already paid to be carried over to the following year. Then, the next year, I became interested in a school through an MBA event, only to discover that the application deadline was just two weeks away. When I consulted Mr. Round on short notice, he rearranged his already busy schedule and provided essay support. I am deeply grateful for the flexibility and understanding he showed in responding to my situation.

Personal character

The MBA journey is truly a series of challenges: the language barrier, demanding work responsibilities, dramatic changes in personal life, pressure from one’s surroundings, school deadlines, and the steadily rising costs. There are countless reasons to give up, and I myself nearly did so many times. Mr. Round supports applicants in a positive yet sincere manner throughout these challenges. When my English scores were not improving, he encouraged me with positive words, while also honestly explaining the implications of my current scores. In addition, he recommended books and classes that could help improve my scores, which I actually made use of. When changes in my personal situation required a major shift in target schools, he researched programs that might fit my new circumstances. I was also able to meet him in person when he visited Tokyo and receive direct advice, which helped me finalize my school choices. He was consistently positive, thoughtful, and precise in his advice, which made him someone I could truly trust.

Additional advice regarding MBA applications

One realization I had through this journey is just how much more difficult improving English scores can be than expected. Online, there are many success stories describing people who achieve high scores in just a few months and gain admission within less than a year. Large test prep schools sometimes suggest that such outcomes are readily achievable. However, based on my experience, I believe such cases are rare (though I initially believed it myself). I recommend calmly assessing your existing language ability, learning capacity, and the amount of time you can realistically devote to studying, and then planning accordingly. I believe Mr. Round will offer the same advice.
