Challenging circumstances

Despite the challenging circumstances—being self-funded, having no overseas experience, and a preparation period of just over six months—I was able to receive offers of admission from all three schools I applied to: Cambridge Judge, Oxford Saïd, and HEC Paris. This was made possible by Round One’s professional support.

Overview

Admitted schools: Cambridge Judge, Oxford Saïd, HEC Paris (all applied in the third round, early January deadlines)

Background: Over three years each in sales/marketing and business planning at a chemical manufacturer

TOEFL: 112

GMAT: 710

Funding: Self-funded

Flexible scheduling

I began preparing seriously for MBA applications around July 2015. I had originally planned to pursue an MBA through company sponsorship, but after not passing the internal selection, I continued studying for the TOEFL without a clear plan. Around July, I finally decided to challenge the process as a self-funded applicant, began studying for the GMAT in August, and only started looking for an essay counselor in mid-October. Most other counselors were already fully booked, and I felt extremely anxious. Even though Round One’s slots were already full, they did not turn me away outright. Instead, they carefully listened to my background and aspirations and promptly offered me a newly opened slot.

Although I began essay preparation in November, I still needed to improve my TOEFL and GMAT scores in parallel. In this situation, the key was to strategically allocate limited time while assessing progress on each task. Round One created a flexible schedule with clear priorities. As a result, I was able to complete the GMAT in November and the TOEFL in early December, while simultaneously building the framework for my essays. Based on that foundation, I was able to focus fully on essays in December. Even so, I was ultimately unable to complete all essays within the originally scheduled counseling sessions. However, they graciously accommodated additional sessions over the year-end and New Year period, allowing me to complete essays for all three schools by early January. I have nothing but admiration for Emma’s professionalism in adjusting her schedule during what must have been an extremely demanding peak season.

Comprehensive, multi-dimensional advice

One of Round One’s greatest strengths is the breadth of guidance that goes far beyond essay editing. In addition to application strategy, CVs, recommendations, essays, and interview preparation, they also provided advice on how to communicate with schools, final checks of online application forms, Round One’s own newsletters, introductions to MBA-related events, and connections to past applicants—covering virtually every aspect of the MBA application process.

Strategic Guidance was particularly invaluable. Because I was applying privately and without informing my company, I struggled with questions such as how to arrange recommendation letters, how to explain my self-funded status to schools, and how to articulate a compelling career goal under those constraints. Drawing on their extensive experience—as well as direct experience serving in MBA admissions—Stephen and Emma provided strategic, concrete advice on how to present myself and communicate in ways that would be appealing to schools. As a result, I felt confident approaching both essays and interviews, even as a self-funded applicant.

High quality

The overall quality of Round One’s services was exceptionally high—truly professional. Whether it was the substance of application strategy advice, the speed and quality of essay editing, or the responsiveness of communication, every aspect met or exceeded my expectations.

One particularly memorable component was interview training. The importance of interviews in MBA applications goes without saying, yet after expending so much energy on TOEFL, GMAT, and essays, this stage can easily receive insufficient preparation. Round One’s interview training rigorously and comprehensively evaluated interview performance from a professional perspective. This was extremely helpful in maintaining a sense of urgency, sustaining motivation, and accurately gauging the gap between my current level and the admission standard. Thanks to Round One’s interview training, I believe I was able to maintain focus through to the on-campus interviews at the end of February.

In closing

In closing, I cannot overstate that without encountering Round One, my MBA application journey would not have been possible. Self-funded applicants face challenges that differ from those of company-sponsored candidates—greater uncertainty, the prospect of resignation or career transition, and the lack of understanding or support from one’s workplace. I strongly encourage you to consult with Round One. Based on their extensive counseling experience, they will offer strategic and realistic solutions tailored to your situation. You may find yourself thinking, “So that’s how this can be handled,” or realizing that “this aspect isn’t actually such a concern for schools.” Many such breakthroughs are likely.

Round One is far more than an essay counseling service—it is a reliable and steadfast partner. What applicants truly need is a strong determination to succeed in MBA admissions. If you have that resolve, Round One will provide the powerful support needed to turn it into reality. If you are uncertain, I strongly encourage you to consult with Mr. Round.
