MBA
Matriculated school: HEC Paris
Despite applying while stationed overseas—and facing disadvantages in terms of access to information and know-how, as well as relatively low test scores—I was able to successfully gain admission to my target school thanks to Round One’s comprehensive, end-to-end support. In MBA applications, the key lies in the process of uncovering and articulating one’s inner self. Even without particularly unique experiences, everyone has aspects that can be compelling; what matters, beyond test scores, is how those elements are shaped and presented. By entrusting nearly this entire process to Round One, I was ultimately able to present myself to the fullest extent.
Limiting the number of clients
Ensuring quality control, and at the same time being able to maintain full operational capacity even during the winter application peak (I wanted to avoid a situation where a counselor accepts too many clients and then, during peak season, focuses only on ultra–top-school applicants and is unable to allocate sufficient resources to others).
Providing total support from strategy to essays to interviews
Because I struggled with test preparation for a long time and had limited time overall, I did not want to spend time coordinating with multiple people. In addition, involving too many parties can lead to differing assumptions and inconsistent advice, increasing the risk of losing direction.
Sense of fit
It is often said that “fit with the counselor is important,” but this is an abstract concept and can mean very different things to different people (similar outlooks, personality, sense of familiarity, etc.). Given that I was seeking comprehensive support and would be spending a long time working together, I placed particular importance on this aspect.
A client-centered mindset
While searching for a counselor, I contacted many people via Skype, but Round One was the only one who proposed appointment times using the time zone of the country where I was living. From the very beginning, I could see consideration for the person on the other side in many respects. This may sound like a minor detail, but for me it was actually quite significant. Having frequently worked with people in Western countries, I had a strong personal sense that attention to such details is often lacking; conversely, the ability to offer small but thoughtful considerations from the other person’s perspective is extremely important when working on projects with non-Japanese counterparts. For that reason, I found Round One’s stance very appealing.
A professional stance
During my initial counseling sessions, many other counselors simply asked, “So, what would you like to ask?” without offering any explanation. In contrast, Round One first provided a thorough explanation of their services. Although counseling is close to a sole proprietorship, it is still a business, and I had always felt uncomfortable with counselors who seemed to abdicate their responsibility to explain their services to potential clients, or who took a condescending tone. Feeling this strong sense of professionalism was a major factor for me. In addition, the explanations were accurate and detailed, clarifying many of the questions I had at the outset, which built strong trust in them as professionals.
Overall coordination and time management capability
This aspect, handled by Stephen, was the single most critical element throughout my application process. As mentioned earlier, because I was applying while stationed overseas, there was an information gap compared to applicants in Japan. In addition, I was facing what might be called a “triple burden,” with TOEFL, GMAT, and essays all progressing simultaneously, to the point where I could no longer judge on my own what I should prioritize. In response, Round One provided very concrete proposals and schedules—such as which documents needed to be prepared by when, what materials would be reviewed in the next session, and what score thresholds would determine whether to continue or abandon certain options. Without this level of management, I am certain I would have failed. At the same time, the approach was not rigid; schedules were flexibly adjusted according to circumstances, and I was supported by Round One’s overall coordination right through to the end of the application process.
Efficient, high-quality essay reviews
Essay reviews were handled by Emma, and we typically set aside slots of about two to three hours almost every week to conduct reviews and revisions. What stood out was the style: rather than an inefficient back-and-forth of emailing drafts multiple times until completion, we worked intensively within clearly scheduled slots, which made the process extremely efficient. If drafts were sent in advance, it was not always necessary to spend the slot on Skype together, allowing me to use that time for work or study and progress on multiple fronts in parallel. Emma also had a firm grasp of essays I had written previously and would advise, for example, that a particular question was similar to another school’s prompt and could be leveraged effectively, further improving time efficiency. The most remarkable aspects of Emma’s reviews were her extraordinary speed and ability to polish writing; I was amazed at how quickly she could review and refine content in a short time. Her language was varied and expressive, skillfully capturing my intended meaning while making it more compelling without distorting it. I believe that receiving interview invitations from all six schools I applied to was largely thanks to the high quality of these reviews.
Concrete interview training with written feedback
Round One offers several types of interview training, but I found the Type A training—full mock interviews conducted in the same format as the actual interviews—particularly valuable. The feedback report provided afterward included detailed comments on each and every statement I made, which was extremely useful in improving my interview performance. I received very concrete advice, such as which phrasing worked well, which points strayed from the main argument and should be avoided, and where examples were needed because responses were too abstract. Because this feedback was provided in a clear, written format, it was easy to incorporate into revisions of my interview talking points and especially useful for final checks just before interviews. This was particularly helpful in strengthening delivery, expression, and responses to unexpected questions, even when I already had the core episodes and content prepared.
Emotional support
MBA applications place heavy physical and mental demands on applicants. Balancing work with study and time management, dealing with stress when results do not materialize, and coping with the pressure of fixed timelines due to company sponsorship can all be overwhelming. Even by late December—at the peak of application preparation—I was unable to achieve even a minimum GMAT score and felt deeply discouraged. At that time, Stephen consistently encouraged me, while simultaneously identifying backup candidate schools and even helping devise negotiation plans with my sponsoring company. This support was truly irreplaceable for me at that moment. While this is just one example, he was always courteous and positive in his encouragement under normal circumstances as well. Being in an environment where I could share both good news and bad news at any time, and where I felt genuinely understood thanks to the comprehensive support, became a vital emotional anchor during what is otherwise a very solitary application journey.
By entrusting Round One both as a partner to fill the gaps in my application and as an advisor to bring out my strengths more fully, I was ultimately able to reach my goal. I am convinced that the same outcome would not have been possible with another counselor.
I was the first person at my sponsoring company to contract with Round One, but I never doubted that choice. Now that the process is complete, I can confidently recommend Round One’s services, and I have already begun recommending them to future company-sponsored applicants at my firm.
I wish every success to those who read this account in their own application journeys, and I hope this testimonial will serve as a helpful reference when considering a counselor.
