Despite having an ordinary background, I was able to receive an offer of admission from Wharton thanks to Round One!
Matriculated school: Wharton
Background: Financial institution professional, company-sponsored, age 31 (at time of application), so-called “pure domestic” background
Thanks to the support of Mr. Round and Ms. Round, I truly feel that I was able to receive an offer of admission from my first-choice school, Wharton. I am filled with gratitude toward both of them.
I hope that writing this acceptance testimonial can serve as a small gesture of thanks, so I am sharing my experience here despite my modest writing ability.
I was not sure how to choose an essay counselor, and I also felt that spending too much time selecting one would be a waste (that time should be spent studying for tests). Because a senior colleague at my company who had been sent abroad on a company sponsorship had used Round One, I decided to go with them. In hindsight, this was absolutely the right decision, and I am extremely satisfied. I would like to highlight three reasons why the experience was so excellent.
Not only does Round One cover the entire process—from building an application portfolio to interview preparation—but they also support the many small, detailed tasks that arise within each stage. For example, they review and revise responses to detailed application form questions (such as parents’ occupations and titles), proposed schedules for campus visits, and even the wording of thank-you emails sent after interviews. This significantly reduces mental burden. In the MBA application process, where there is an overwhelming amount to do, receiving such comprehensive support was a tremendous source of physical and psychological reassurance.
The quality of each service—especially essay counseling—is exceptionally high. I applied to more than 10 schools, and only two did not invite me to interview after essay submission. Moreover, I was not rejected by any school where I did interview (meaning I was either admitted or placed on the waitlist). I believe this clearly demonstrates the high quality of Round One’s services. While some may associate Round One primarily with Steve, my essay counselor was Emma, which confirms that both of them are outstanding counselors.
As for why the quality is so high, there are three key reasons.
First, they thoroughly refine your career goals, resulting in very strong content related to the so-called “Why MBA” narrative.
The second reason is their effort to truly understand who you are as a person and to incorporate that into your essays. During the early brainstorming stages of essay counseling, I received extremely valuable advice. Thanks to this, I was able to clearly articulate the environment in which I was raised, the values I developed and have cherished, and how I have put those values into practice. Simply building a logical career goal narrative does not convey individuality; without that personal dimension, schools have little reason to admit you. I believe incorporating one’s authentic self is essential.
The final reason is that, while respecting the applicant’s intentions, they propose the most appropriate way to express ideas. When you wrestle with and finally extract your own thoughts, it becomes difficult to evaluate them objectively, and it is easy to lose sight of how they may appear to others—especially those from different cultural backgrounds. Round One excels at refining this. I vividly remember asking whether I could express an important point in a certain way, only to be told that it might create a negative impression and that an alternative expression would be more appropriate. I recall feeling a mix of surprise, understanding, and deep appreciation.
The Round siblings are both individuals of outstanding character. While I have heard of counselors who are difficult or use harsh language, both of them consistently treated me with calmness and warmth. During the highly stressful application process, they provided genuine peace of mind.
Finally, to those who are planning to pursue an MBA: your own effort is, of course, the most important factor, but I believe Round One will maximize the impact of that effort. Please take care of your health and do your best.
And to Steve and Emma—thank you very much for everything!
