Reapplicant reflections

Realistically speaking, admission to a Top 5 school is not possible without very strong test scores. That said, R1 contributes to strengthening every element of an application—not just essays.

I am a reapplicant. I knew that the primary reason for my rejection the previous year was my test scores, so I resolved to devote myself fully to TOEFL and GMAT preparation. However, I also believed that I should do my utmost across all components, including essays, which led me to knock on R1’s door. I did consider other firms as well, but one comment Steve (Mr. Round) made during our initial counseling session completely captured my attention:

“Although your previous essay sets are great, you haven’t reflected the full content of your résumé.”

I had confidence in my professional experience and résumé, but he pointed out that my prior essays had failed to fully convey those strengths. This was a critically important insight. That moment marked the beginning of my work with Steve and Emma (Ms. Round).

Strategic Guidance

At first, I thought the fee for Strategic Guidance was expensive. In hindsight, however, this turned out to be the best value service R1 offers (laughs). No matter the question or editing request, Steve always responded sincerely and promptly. In my case, I relied on him during a range of special situations—from early outreach to school representatives to post-admission program changes—and his edits to my letters of inquiry and thank-you notes ultimately produced exactly the outcomes I was hoping for. In short, those who make full use of his support benefit the most.

Essay counseling

Emma handled my essay counseling. To be honest, I felt uneasy when Steve told me that Emma would be in charge of my essays—most people expect to work directly with Steve. However, Emma is exceptionally capable and deeply dedicated. What I found most outstanding about her service was the counseling she provided on the overall essay set for each school *before* individual essays were written. With a strong understanding of each school’s preferences, she skillfully allocated an applicant’s experiences across different questions. She also clarified the key points to focus on when writing each essay. When this discussion was sufficiently thorough, individual essays could often be completed in a single counseling session. At times, she even exceeded the scheduled session time to engage in detailed discussion and editing. Her perspective as a woman was particularly evident in how she refined softer elements such as the expression of extracurricular activities.

Interviews

For interviews, I had my own reasons and, in fact, did not make extensive use of R1’s interview services. That said, judging from the initial complimentary mock interview and its feedback, the service is extremely professional. The feedback in particular was filled with remarkably useful advice. I also believe that “killer questions” are absolutely essential for standing out among many interview candidates.

An interesting fact

Considering cost-effectiveness, I asked another counselor to review the essays for my final few schools. However, in retrospect, all of the schools I was admitted to were those whose essays were edited by Emma, while the schools reviewed by other counselors resulted in rejections. I cannot definitively claim causation, but what is clear is that Emma is truly professional and prepared the best possible essay sets—down to wording and expression—for each school.

R1’s challenges

Finally, it would not be fair to offer only praise, so I will also mention R1’s challenges. As stated at the outset, at the Top 5 level, no matter how strong your essays are, you will not even be considered without excellent test scores—particularly TOEFL. Steve understands this well and is always insistent about raising test scores. However, R1 does not fundamentally provide solutions for improving English proficiency.

While there are some effective suggestions—such as joining certain organizations—much is ultimately left to the applicant. MBA admissions are a comprehensive battle across all elements, so it may be necessary to consider complementary programs with reliable test-prep providers. Otherwise, Steve’s constant reminders about test scores could be perceived as deflecting responsibility if results do not go well. Additionally, essay counseling and interviews are expensive; the amount I paid during the intense December push essentially wiped out my entire monthly salary.

In closing

These are the pros and cons. The idea that “you’ll be fine if you just leave everything to R1” is a complete myth. R1 is highly reliable, but only on the premise that you are an independent professional. Maintain good balance, and enjoy productive counseling sessions with Steve and Emma.

I wish everyone the very best of luck.
