Those of you viewing this page now likely hold both hope for studying abroad in the future and anxiety about the MBA application process. With so many counselors and schools available, making comparisons may not be something that can be done overnight. I felt the same way myself. However, on the very day I met him, I had no hesitation about asking him to be my counselor. As I recall, the two deciding factors for me were his “track record” and the feeling I had when we met and spoke.
Had I not encountered Round One, I do not believe I would have been able to conclude my MBA journey in a way that I found truly satisfying. It is because I was able to run side by side with Steve Round for this entire year that I can now say I have completed my MBA, and for that I am deeply grateful. Below, I outline the strengths and distinguishing features of Round One.
Based on his extensive experience supporting numerous applicants, I believe he excels at analyzing each individual client. In particular, for company-sponsored candidates, he often has a deep understanding of their organizations’ work and characteristics through interactions with past clients, which I found extremely useful and efficient when writing essays. For someone like me, whose company and role were somewhat unique, even explaining my work clearly in Japanese was difficult—doing so in English was even more challenging. In that regard, the guidance I received from him was invaluable.
From the perspective of “knowing the opponent,” I also felt that he had an exceptional understanding of what admissions committees truly look for. From résumé structure to essays, interview comments, and even “killer questions,” he was constantly thinking about how to present me as a candidate a school would want to admit. Through this process, he skillfully drew out the qualities and responses that schools wanted to hear, and his essay guidance was instrumental in my success. While a résumé may appear to be just a one-page self-introduction, its impact is greater than many expect. At MBA fairs, school representatives often develop interest in candidates simply by reviewing their résumés. In fact, I was frequently told, “Your background is impressive,” and in several cases was invited to interview even before submitting my test scores.
There was a period when I struggled mentally because my test scores were not improving. During that time, Steve continued to encourage and support me. In particular, from December through January—when TOEFL and GMAT preparation overlapped—he constantly considered how I could prepare as efficiently as possible. He was also attentive to how I was balancing preparation with my work responsibilities. When my workload became extremely heavy, he adjusted the counseling process flexibly. Drawing on the client analysis described above, he provided insightful and multifaceted suggestions that made essay preparation far more efficient. Thanks to this, I believe I was able to progress through the counseling process with a high degree of efficiency.
The interview training was extremely effective. Before my interviews, I practiced in interview format with both Steve and Emma. Much of the training was grounded in real past experience, with questions reflecting actual trends and patterns seen in interviews. I clearly remember that many of the same types of questions we practiced at Round One appeared in my real interviews. Because many of my interviewers were women, the training I did with Emma—whom I did not usually work with during counseling—proved especially valuable.
Round One is a counseling professional that truly values its clients. Closely related to its strong track record, Round One places great importance on its alumni network of past applicants. During the application process, it is possible to be introduced to these predecessors. This network was useful not only for sharing information in advance, but also for gaining insight about interviewers and, at times, for seeking recommendations. I found it to be an extremely effective client network.
Finally, Steve Round is my mentor, my older brother figure, and a trusted friend. I will never forget this year in which I met him, nor the year we ran this journey together.
